Patriotic Festivities are Set for Lake Chalapa
(Ajijic, Jalisco, 15 September) After Monday’s exchange of gunfire on the Chalapa town pier between police and delinquents, many citizens decided it was too dangerous to go out late at night, and the patriotic festivities were at risk of being cancelled. However, contrary to rumors, the celebration of the 201st anniversary of the “Grito de Independencia” will be held in Chalapa and Ajijic as usual, according to Liliana Davila, Chalapa’s press spokesperson. In recognition of the “special circumstances” this year, however, police will begin to clear the streets of revelers, starting at midnight. The only other change in the schedule is that the folk dance presentation, scheduled for Thursday night in Ajijic, was cancelled. Ms. Davila did not say whether this was in response to Monday’s violence or for some other, more “technical” reason.
