Campaign to find Missing Cat Goes Viral in Mexico
It was supposed to be a safe two hour journey for Maya the Cat when her owner put her on a plane from Cancun to Guadalajara. When the plane arrived at its destination, Maya’s carrying case was there but Maya was gone. Mayas whereabouts remain a mystery.
The airline, Volaris, claims that Maya escaped in the Cancun airport before boarding the plane.
Unmoved by the airline’s explanation and effort to locate his cat, Maya’s owner has taken to Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube in an effort to locate the lost feline which he describe as “like a daughter”.
The fiasco has been a big public relations headache for the airline, which has conducted an “exhaustive” search for the cat and is currently offering $10,000 pesos for the return of Maya.
The social media campaign for the return of the missing cat is testimony to the increasingly important role of social media in Mexico as the population eschews traditional media in favor of Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube.
