Acapulco’s principal historical attraction is Fuerte de San Diego (Fort San Diego), a remarkable monument to the days of Spanish colonization where attacks by natives and pirates compelled the Spanish to construct this star-shaped fort on a hill overlooking Acapulco Bay.
The original Fuerte de San Diego was destroyed in 1776 by an earthquake, but was reconstructed in 1783. The old fort today is a historical attraction, a cultural center, and offers one of Acapulco only bookstores (where one can buy literature). It’s a great place to spend an afternoon to round out your Acapulco experience.

Fortín Alvarez
A nearby attraction is Fortín Alvarez (Alvarez Bunker), a small bunker constructed to to house armaments dating to 1616 – the year the original Fuerte de San Diego was constructed.

Armed with cannons and a spectacular view, Fuerte de San Diego is a worthwhile stop and an interesting departure from the fun and sun for which Acapulco is best known.
