Forget the history lesson on the background of Cancun Mexico . . . You are here to find out what's hot and why Cancun is the destination of choice for so many visitors each year . . . and I'm here to give you the scoop.

As a Mexico travel writer I find myself living in many places that typify a third world country. Cancun Mexico is NOT one of those places. When I visit Cancun my heart soars as I reacquaint myself with all of the comforts of home . . . and then some!

So what makes Cancun such a great Mexico vacation destination? Let's make a list :

A new city complete with high end shopping malls, movie theaters, clean streets that don't scare the crap out of my car, modern police and fire departments . . . the city has no real history and reflects capitalism at its zenith . . . I feel like I'm home in the US!

Endless white sand beaches with crystal clear turquoise blue water. Not just in Cancun's hotel zone . . . but 45 minutes down the coast in chic Playa del Carmen and 45 minutes further down the coast in picturesque Tulum. The great Caribbean beaches here aren't limited to what's behind your hotel, but they are also found in great locations down the coast that are a cheap shuttle ride down the road.

Water sports! If you are into sailing, sea kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving . . . Cancun is ideally located on the Mayan Riviera and close to what calls out your name in your dreams.

Ruins! While there is a very small set of ruins left in the middle of the hotel zone (El Rey), Cancun is in range of the ruins of Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza, Uxmal and more. One of the things that makes Cancun Mexico the perfect vacation destination is its proximity to the old and the new. So you can experience the best of both worlds!

Is that it? That all? Is that what makes Cancun Mexico the number one vacation destination? Yes! The Mexican government was so right when it planned on building Cancun based solely on the three laws of business . . . location, Location, LOCATION. Cancun has it all.

Cancun Hotels : The best example of high end accommodations on the beach is the pyramid shaped Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort. Cancun Real Estate : As mentioned above, it is all about "location", but it does come at a price. Cancun is probably one of the more expensive places to buy real estate in Mexico. Larger real estate development followed the hotels built in the 70's. The main property types you will find are homes, condos and apartments. Prices vary, but the closer you get to the beach, the higher the price. You can find something nice for a couple hundred thousand or spend up to a couple million (USD). Cancun Timeshare: Right on the beach ... the best restaurants and shopping just steps away ... a nightlife rumored to be so fantastic that you really have to experience it to believe it. Of course you want to buy real estate in Cancun! Owning a vacation home or apartment definitely can get quite expensive, so if you really want to own property here I'd recommend a Cancun timeshare at a resort like Fiesta Americana Cancun. It's right on the beach ... in the heart of the Hotel Zone ... and you'll only spend thousands instead of millions ... what more could you want!
